Getting Discounts From Your Current Insurance Provider
How many discounts are there on your auto insurance policy? If your answer is “I don’t know”, you should probably find out - it could save you hundreds of dollars per year. If your answer is “a few” you should probably continue reading as you likely qualify for more than that. If your answer is “a lot” well good on ya, mate! That’s the way to stay on top of the game and take full advantage of the financial situation.
What Discounts Are There?
The answer is that there are too many to list here! This is why you should be eligible for more than “a few” on your policy at any given time, especially if you are an older, safe driver and/or have been with your insurance company for a long time. If they aren’t providing you with these discounts you should get a little miffed, feel a little gypped, and read on for ways of turning the tide in your insurance situation.
A few of the insurance discounts being offered today include:
- Air Bag - That’s right, just for having the right type of legally installed airbags some auto insurers provide discounts.
- Anti-Theft System - If you have an active or passive system that prevents someone from stealing your car, you could be eligible for a discount on your comprehensive insurance policy.
- Safe Driver - This will vary from insurer to insurer, but there should be some sort of discount available if you have been with the company for a certain number of years and have stayed accident free.
- Driving Courses - The safe driving, defensive driving, or driver’s ed courses offered by most states, if taken and completed by eligible drivers can also bring discounts to your policy.
- Military - For our men and women who are serving or have served and retired or discharged honorably from the service, many insurance providers will give a discount as their way of saying “Thank You!”
- Multi-Car - If you have more than one vehicle and are having them insured by the same company you should be receiving a discount.
Of course this list is not complete; auto insurance companies can give discounts for anything and everything they want. The trick is to find out what their discounts are available for, see if you are eligible, and then make sure you’re in the boat!
Give Your Agent a Call and Ask
Did you know that auto insurance agents make money doing their job? It’s true! And their job entails more than just signing people up for new policies all the time, they should also be actively working to lower your premiums whenever possible. There is no harm or crime in calling up your insurance agent and asking them “Are there any discounts offered that I might qualify for?” Make them run down the list with you. Make them explain the requirements of each. Make them earn that money they are being paid as a part of your premiums. Above all, be nice, be polite and be friendly with them.
